What Is the Difference Between a B.A. and a B.S.

One of the decisions students face when choosing a college or university is deciding whether to get a B.A. degree or a B.S. degree. In some cases, a school offers both degrees. More commonly, a school offers either one degree or the other. Sometimes which degree is awarded depends on the college major. Heres a look at the similarities and differences between B.A. and B.S. degrees and how to choose which one is best for you. What Is a B.A Degree? A B.A. degree is a Bachelor of Arts degree. This degree offers a broad overview of all areas of a college education. A Bachelor of Arts degree is the most common type of college degree awarded in literature, history, languages, music, and other arts and humanities. However, liberal arts colleges award this degree in the sciences, too. What Is a B.S. Degree? A B.S. degree is a Bachelor of Science degree. This type of degree is common in a scientific or technical discipline. The primary difference between this degree and the B.A. degree is that more upper-division (300-400 level) major courses are required for graduation. Students typically take fewer core courses as a result. A bachelor of science is typically awarded for technical majors, such as engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, nursing, agriculture, astronomy, etc. Comparing B.A. and B.S. Degrees Whether you choose a B.A. or a B.S. program, you can be assured either selection will prepare you for success in an academic field. Youll take general university-level courses in math, science, arts, humanities, social sciences, and communication. With both programs, a student gets to choose electives to explore areas of interest. The strength of a B.A. degree is that a student can gain proficiency in less-related disciplines (e.g., science and business or English and music), while sharpening writing and communication skills. The strength of a B.S. degree is that it hones analytical skills and lets a student more completely master a specific discipline. Is a B.S. Best for Chemistry and Other Sciences? If youre interested in a degree in chemistry, physics, or another science, dont assume a B.S. is the only or best degree option. You can get accepted to graduate school or get a job with either degree. Usually, the choice boils down to choosing which school you wish to attend, since the culture and philosophy of an institution is tied to its degree offerings. If youre seeking a broader exposure to ideas or wish to pursue a secondary degree in a non-technical field, a Bachelor of Arts degree may be your best choice. If you prefer to focus on a specific scientific or technical discipline, taking more courses in your major and fewer in the arts and humanities, a Bachelor of Science degree may work best for you. Neither degree is superior to the other, but one may be better-tailored to your needs and interests. Keep in mind, while its possible to get a job upon college graduation in engineering, most science and engineering majors continue education in graduate school, working toward Masters and Doctorate degrees. Choosing which type of degree to get or your college major is important but doesnt close off future opportunities.

Communion by Years and Years free essay sample

When Olly Alexander sang in his shower in 2010, the last thing he expected was to be asked to join a band that would later rise to the top around the world, especially in the UK and Australia. Years and Years was formed by chance when Michael Goldsworthy (bassist) moved to London from Australia. He met Emre Turksmen (synthesizer) over the Internet. Olly Alexander (the lead vocalist) joined when Turksmen heard his voice over at a friend’s house as Alexander took a shower. Thus, they created a band and released their first exceptional album, Communion with an RB style of Justin Timberlake, the hypnotic vocals of Halsey, and a twist of electronic pop, much like that of Disclosure.Prior to the release of Communion, a string of singles were released. They later appeared on the album released on June 22, 2015 with 17 tracks. Most of the songs use electronic beats like in â€Å"Worship† and â€Å"King†. We will write a custom essay sample on Communion by Years and Years or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page However, some are slow and melancholy, such as â€Å"Memo† which uses instrumental music, artfully incorporating a few piano pieces. Another somber song is â€Å"Eyes Shu.t† The album expresses variety with more sensual songs like â€Å"Without,† which picks up with an audible beat later on. All the songs talk of different aspects of love. One of my favorites is â€Å"Real,† the first single released. The chorus starts with â€Å"Oh, if I had been enough for you / Would I be better? Would I be good?† Its astounding vocals pull at the listener’s heartstrings. â€Å"Shine† is similar in content as it talks of love but different in message as Alexander sings, â€Å"Its you Ive been waiting to find.† The entire album is pop, artfully using auto-tune to achieve wistful and enticing sound. The songs on Communion use repetition to evoke these sentimental feelings. Even though the sound doesnt feel authentic, Years and Years do their j ob by using synthetic beats and sounds. The album received relatively positive criticism. AllMusic describes Olly Alexander as having â€Å"an ethereal voice that still packs a soulful punch.† This contributes to the overall infrastructure to the songs with their tranquility that calms the listener. The band has received some criticism because their vocals sound similar to that of Sam Smith and others. However, Jon Caramanica of The New York Times cannot deny that Communion is â€Å"effective because its familiar.†Years and Years received the prestigious BBC Sound of 2015 award for their work on Communion. They have also been nominated for many other awards, one of which is the Critics Choice Award for the 2015 Brit Awards. Overall, the album is exceptional because of its unique electronic sound and upbeat tunes. These catchy songs are bound to rise to the top in the US and will have any fangirl mesmerized by the sound of Years and Years.

My Top Three Albums free essay sample

If I had to choose only three albums to listen to while stranded on a desert island, the first I would pick is â€Å"American Idiot† by Green Day, my favorite band. â€Å"American Idiot† is one of their longest albums and has a story to it; it’s a lot like going to an opera, only with better music. I can listen to it as a whole and almost get the feeling of having read a book or watched a movie. Another aspect of this album that keeps my interest is the production. For many parts of the album, the band recorded a heavily distorted guitar with an acoustic guitar underneath, which gives the guitar a very thick and full sound. I have actually started using this trick in my home recording studio, and this technique really improves the sound. The band also experiments with writing in unusual key signatures. Three of the songs are all in G# which is a strange key for guitar since it limits the open strings/chords. We will write a custom essay sample on My Top Three Albums or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Another starts in C# but then changes throughout. Since there is piano in the song, and there is a G# harmonic, I can tell the guitars are in standard tuning, and therefore played in a strange key. Along with having many key and time changes, this song is a 10-minute epic with everything I would want in both its production and writing. The second album I would take is â€Å"Final Straw† by Snow Patrol. I’ll need a change of pace from Green Day, and this is the perfect choice. Almost all the songs are slow, but not boring. Pacing aside, the reason I really like this album is the writing. The songs feel like poems turned into music and not just lyrics. I can only hope eventually to write like Snow Patrol. The production is also great. I love the sound that comes from their guitars. I have no idea what they did, but they have a very clean, mid-driven sound. Along with the production, the guitar playing is great. This band has two guitarists and actually uses both, playing harmonies on the separate guitars throughout the album. Very often, one guitarist plays chords while the other plays octaves at the third of the chord, which comes out sounding perfect for ballads. The drums also sound perfect. The snare drum comes in clear and doesn’t ring out at all. It sounds like they not only tuned it just right, but also found just the correct spot for the microphone and put just enough reverb to get a great sound. The band also adds orchestrations to some songs. During slower songs, violins add just enough to make the songs even better. The third album I would take is â€Å"City of Evil† by Avenged Sevenfold. When I first heard this band, I knew it had a mix of everything I like. They have guitar solos, but the songs are also good. This band sounds like Yngwie Malmsteen meets Green Day, which is perfect for me. â€Å"City of Evil† has a very classic sound of both the chord progressions and the guitar solos, which have a lot of harmonies. They often play thirds during the heavily distorted guitar solos. Since it is going so fast, the guitar has to be dead on to make it good, which it is. The production on this album is great, but there aren’t many things that jump out as amazing in the production. Although the guitarist from Avenged Sevenfold can play like a neo-classical virtuoso, the songs would still be good rock songs even without them. Avenged Sevenfold has both good songs and the musicianship of virtuoso players. If I were stranded on a desert island and only allowed to bring three albums, these would be good enough for a while or at least a few days.
